After a series of escalating rows between Ankara and Berlin, Germany has become the first European country to signal its intention to take economic action against its NATO ally.  

  • German-Turkish relations have reached an unprecedented low after German companies and individuals were threatened with investigation over terror links in Turkey  
  • Ankara accuses Berlin of refusing to acknowledge the security challenges it faces following the failed coup attempt
  • The result has been a series of tit-for-tat disputes that now appear to have entered a new phase, with Germany signalling its intent to take tougher measures

On July 20, German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel cut short his holiday and announced a review into export credits to Turkey, while warning German citizens against travelling to the country. The move came after the decision by Turkish officials to include German companies in the investigation into the Gulen movement…
