The trial of senior staff from the Cumhuriyet newspaper has come to encapsulate growing international and domestic concerns over Turkey’s justice system

  • Cumhuriyet staff are being tried on terrorism charges relating to last year’s failed coup attempt
  • International observers and domestic critics argue that the charges against the 17 defendants are politically motivated
  • The outcome of the trial looks set to become a definitive moment for freedom of the press in the country

On October 31 2016, police raided the offices of Cumhuriyet newspaper, arresting 11 senior members of staff and issuing arrest warrants for five more. The raid came three and a half months after the July 15 failed coup attempt, with prosecutors accusing the newspaper of publishing material justifying the military’s attempted takeover
