The fate of the Turkey’s second biggest opposition party is closely tied to the trial of its most important figure, Selahattin Demirtas

  • Selahattin Demirtas, co-leader of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) is standing trial under Turkey’s anti-terrorism laws
  • The case is part of a wider crackdown on the HDP for alleged links to armed Kurdish militants, which the government argues is necessary in order to stabilise the country following last years failed coup
  • The trial’s outcome is likely to have a significant impact on crucial presidential and parliamentary elections expected to be held in the near future

The trial of Selahattin Demirtas, co-leader of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), has opened in Ankara. Demirtas has been in detention since November 2016, when he was arrested alongside eight of his parliamentary colleagues. All nine have been charged with a variety of offences under Turkey’s anti-terrorism laws…
