The attempted shooting of a German-Turkish national has refocused attention on the relationship between the Turkish government and diaspora communities in Europe

  • Deniz Naki, a prominent member of Germany’s Kurdish community, claims he was targeted by far-right Turkish nationalists
  • The incident comes after politicians in Turkey and Germany raised concerns about the growth of Turkish nationalist organisations in Europe with alleged links to the state
  • The Turkish government is keen to counter what it regards as an unacceptably high level of activity by Kurdish activist groups on the continent, but critics claim the real aim is to stifle dissent

German police are investigating an incident in which shots were fired at the car of Deniz Naki,  a prominent Kurdish footballer, on January 7. The shooting took place near the town of Duren, North Rhine-Westphalia, with local media reports suggesting that investigators are focusing on possible links to Turkish nationalist groups which have recently come to prominence in the region…
