Turkey’s latest military operation in Syria will be defined as much by its diplomatic impact as by its success or failure on the ground  

  • The Turkish Armed Forces face significant obstacles to achieving a decisive victory against the predominantly Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) in Afrin
  • This is likely to be compounded by growing pressure from the US and Russia to bring the operation to an end
  • Instead, Turkey is seeking to shift the balance of power in Northern Syria by weakening the YPG’s negotiating position ahead of moves towards a permanent national settlement
