Turkish support for recent US-led airstrikes against the Assad regime has underlined the differences between Ankara and Moscow over Syria’s future   

  • Turkey has long called for Western intervention in Syria and remains a staunch opponent of the Assad regime
  • This anti-Assad stance is at odds with Turkey’s growing cooperation with Russia on a number of regional issues, highlighting the potential limits of their relationship
  • However, Turkey’s priority in Syria is countering the influence of Kurdish fighters partnered with the US, which requires on-going Russian support

The Turkish government has welcomed airstrikes by the US, UK and France targeting military facilities belonging to the Assad regime. Ankara has been pushing for its NATO allies to take action against the Assad government since the onset of the armed conflict…
