Early elections further increase the likelihood of a Justice and Development Party victory under the new presidential system

  • The presidential and parliamentary elections have been brought forward amid concerns over the economy and the future of an on-going military intervention in Syria
  • The move is likely to benefit the ruling Justice and Development Party by strengthening its electoral alliance with the Nationalist Action Party ahead of a potentially crucial presidential run-off
  • An early vote also adds further challenges to the divided opposition parties, leaving them with limited time to overcome a range of structural obstacles

President Erdogan has announced that elections to choose the country’s next president and parliament will be held on June 24. The vote will be the first held as part of the presidential system introduced by a closely contested referendum last April. The next president is set to have significantly expanded executive powers and will likely define Turkey’s future direction over at least the medium-term…
