Events in Manbij, Syria are likely to determine Turkey’s future role in the country
- Turkey hopes a recent agreement will see it take control of Manbij from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a US-backed militia headed by Kurdish fighters
- Turkish officials argue Manbij could pave the way for Turkey and its Syrian allies to replace the SDF as part of a wider settlement with the US

Turkish officials have continued to insist that fighters from the People’s Protection Units (YPG) will leave the contested Syrian city of Manbij this week as part of a roadmap agreement reached with the US in early June.
