By some measures, the situation of women in Turkey has improved significantly over the last 10 years, but significant obstacles still exist to women’s advancement and parity, a significant issue not just from an ethical standpoint but also with respect to Turkey’s ongoing transformation into a developed and leading world economy.

  • Since 2004, Turkey has seen a marked improvement in a number of key indicators for women’s advancements but many are still below the average for economies of its size.
  • Women’s political participation, while low, has increased in the AKP years and the party has worked to tackle key issues but critics accuse them of misogyny, undermining this progress.
  • Murders of women have risen at an alarming rate in recent years, which the government explains on improved policing and measures to tackle this troubling issue.
