German – Turkey relations have thawed as Ankara looks to offset the row with the US and the threat of economic crisis 

  • President Erdogan has led a state visit to Germany as his government seeks European support to stabilise its economy
  • German-Turkish relations have been at an all-time low in recent years following a series of rows driven by each government’s domestic political concerns
  • But shared economic and strategic interests mean both countries are now ready to adopt an increasingly pragmatic approach going forward

In a sign that both countries are seeking a reengagement after a turbulent period for bilateral relations, President Erdogan has been afforded full military honours on a state visit to Germany. Erdogan had been effectively blocked from entering the country less than four months ago after German authorities denied him permission to hold a campaign rally ahead of the Turkish elections in June. A similar dispute a year earlier saw Erdogan compare German officials to the Nazis, a low point in relations between the two countries…

On September 14, workers on the construction site began an impromptu strike in protest against unsafe and inhumane working conditions, including poor food and accommodation…
