CEFTUS Joint Forum ‘Experience of Women in Contemporary Turkey’

Dr. Funda Ustek is a Postdoctoral Researcher on the ERC funded research project “Peopling Europe: How data make a people (ARITHMUS)​” . Her work focuses on gender, informal economy and missing persons in official statistics using feminist theoretical frameworks to explore social and economic stratification, poverty and gender equality issues. She has recently completed her PhD in Sociology at the University of Oxford (2010-2014), funded by Prof. Anthony Heath and St Cross College Scholarship. Her dissertation explored how the invisibility of women’s informal employment in Turkey is shaped by prevalent gender roles and women’s position in family and in society. Prior to her PhD, she completed a Master’s Degree at the University of Oxford (2009-2010) on Comparative Social Policy as the first Ahmet Ertegun Scholar, and Bachelor degrees at Bogazici University (2004-2009) in Political Science and Philosophy.
