‘The Gezi Spirit and Its Impacts: Recent Developments in Turkey’ 

The Centre for Turkey Studies (CEFTUS) with SOAS Kurdish Society is pleased to invite you to a Joint Forum on ‘The Gezi Spirit and its impacts: Recent developments in Turkey’. Author and Thinker, Mr Ihsan Eliacik will kindly speak at this debate. Eliacik has been known for his anti-capitalist interpretation of Islam and his writings supporting the Anti-capitalist Muslims who actively took part in the Gezi Park protests in early summer this year.

This debate will be kindly co-chaired by Sara Whyatt and Dr Omer Tekdemir. Sara Whyatt is the former Deputy Director of PEN International, the world association of writers. She now works as a consultant, specialising on freedom of expression in Turkey. Omer Tekdemir has recently been awarded PhD in Political Science and International Relations from the School of Government and International Affairs at Durham University, UK. He also holds a MA in International Relations and Contemporary Political Theory from the Centre for the Study of Democracy at University of Westminster, UK and BA from the Political Science Faculty at Istanbul University, Turkey. Tekdemir’s research focuses on Political Theory, Political Economy, International Relations Theory, Kurdish Study, Political Islam, Turkey, EU and Middle East region.

The event will take place on Thursday 19th December 2013, between 7.00PM and 9.00PM in Room V111,  School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.  Please see address for SOAS Vernon Square Campus, not the more widely known SOAS Russell Square Campus.

Speaker Biography

Ihsan Eliacik is an author and a thinker. He holds a BA from Divinity Faculty of Erciyes University (1985-1990). He has been an independent author writing in a variety of publications for over 30 years. He wrote for magazines such as ‘Yarin’ for four years until its closure, ‘Soz ve Adalet’ for eight months where he was editor in chief, and ‘Gercek Hayat’ for two years until it closed down. He wrote 20 books published by the Insa Publications.
