CEFTUS Westminster Debate ‘2013 Analysis of Democracy and Politics in Turkey’
The Centre for Turkey Studies (CEFTUS) is delighted to invite you to a Westminster Debate on democracy and politics in Turkey, 2013. Our keynote speakers are Ms Zeynep Banu Dalaman, Director of the Centre for Studies on Turkey (CST) of Istanbul Aydin University, Mr Bill Park of King’s College, London University and Dr Kerem Oktem of the University of Oxford.

Questions loom over democracy and judicial independence in Turkey following the politically turbulent years of 2013 and 2014 so far. Starting from the Gezi Protests in June 2013, many protests and the recent graft probe caused controversial responses from the Turkish government. Our keynote speakers will kindly analyse the recent political developments in Turkey.
This CEFTUS Westminster Debate is kindly hosted by Stuart Andrew Conservative MP for Pudsey.

The event will take place on Monday 10th of February, between 7PM and 9PM in Committee Room 9, House of Commons. Please note that security checks are required to enter the House of Commons, so we kindly ask you to arrive at 6.30PM, allowing the event to start and end promptly on time.

Speaker Biographies
Ms Zeynep Banu Dalaman is a sociologist and a political scientist. She graduated from the department of Sociology at Bogazici University (1994) and started her political career while she was assisting to Prof. Dr. Nilüfer Göle. She has participated in several political activities for long years and performed many important fieldworks. She accomplished her MA in the department of International Relations Middle-East Politics at Institute of Political Studies in Paris (Sciences-Po Paris). She had started Ph.D. studies in Columbia University, but she had to suspend it because of family reasons. However, she is now carrying on her Ph. D. in the department of International Relations and Political Sciences at the Graduate School of Social Sciences at Fatih University. From 2008 to 2010, she worked as the political advisor for Mayor of Sisli, Mustafa Sarigul. Zeynep Banu Dalaman officially stood as candidate to Mayoralty of Beyoglu from Democratic Left Party (DSP) in the local elections of 2009. Dalaman is currently a lecturer at Istanbul Aydin University, the director of the Centre for Studies on Turkey (CST) and the coordinator of Women Studies.
Mr Bill Park is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Defence Studies, King’s College, London University, and is based at the UK Defence Academy, Shrivenham. He is the author of journal articles, book chapters, and monographs on a range of Turkish foreign policy issues, including its EU accession prospects, Turkey and ESDP, the Cyprus problem, Turkey’s policies towards Northern Iraq, Turkey-US relations, the Fethullah Gulen movement, and the Ergenekon affair. Among his publications is ‘Turkey’s policy towards Northern Iraq: problems and prospects’, Adelphi Paper No. 374, published by the International Institute for Strategic Studies. His book, ‘Modern Turkey: People, State and Foreign Policy in a Globalized World’, was published by Routledge in 2011. He is currently conducting a longer-term study of the three way relationship between Turkey, the US and the Kurdish Regional Government in Northern Iraq in the wake of the US troop withdrawal from Iraq. He serves as a trustee and council member for the British Institute at Ankara, and is an Advisor to the Dialogue Society in London.
Dr Kerem Öktem is Associate Faculty Member of the Oriental Institute at the University of Oxford. He is also Research Fellow at the European Studies Centre, St Antony’s College and an associate of Southeast European Studies at Oxford (SEESOX). This academic year, he also holds the Mercator-IPC fellowship at Istanbul’s Sabanci University. Dr Oktem teaches the courses Politics of the Middle East, Cities and Societies in the Middle East, Modern Turkish History, Politics and International Relations of Turkey, andIslam and Muslims in Europe. He read Modern Middle Eastern Studies at Oxford, where he also completed his D. Phil. at the School of Geography in 2006. His research work focuses on the three core areas of Nationalism and Transnationalism, Politics and International Relations of Turkey and the Politics of Muslims in Europe, the latter of which is also at the heart of his Open Society funded research on Europe’s Muslim Neighbourhoods. His latest books include a co-edited volume on Turkey’s changing foreign policy landscapeAnother Empire? A Decade of Turkey’s Foreign Policy under the Justice and Development Party (Istanbul: Bilgi University Press, 2012 together with Ayşe Kadıoğlu) and his monograph Angry Nation. Turkey since 1989 (London: Zed Books, 2011). Kerem Öktem is founding member of the Project of Armenian and Turkish Studies (PATS), Vice President of the Swiss Research Institute on Turkish Studies (SFST) and a member of the Middle Eastern Studies Association.
